The ordinary work in front of you is itself a calling

It is easy to think a calling means something dramatic: a mission trip, a pulpit, a title. Luther’s teaching on vocation says something plainer and, in its way, harder to live out. The work in front of you right now, the meal you cook, the ledger you balance, the kid you’re raising, is itself the place God has put you to serve the person next to you.

That is why Sherwood does not only build tools for pastors. A retired electrician who volunteers his skill, a woman who has spent thirty years teaching people to swim, a small shop owner: each one is carrying something given to them for someone else’s sake. Our job is just to help it travel further than one room.
